Superfood Spotlight > Turmeric

Posted by Grace Terry on

So let’s talk about turmeric! Most people know turmeric for its anti-inflammatory benefits, but there are so many more advantages to incorporating turmeric into your diet and life. Turmeric is known to slow the effects of Alzheimer's disease, aid muscle recovery, provide great relief to aging skin, and the list goes on. The Beacon Blend team is especially fond of turmeric because it is a superfood that we can use in multiple aspects of our wellness routines. It is also an ingredient in the Beacon Blend Explore smoothie blend. Here are a couple recipes to make turmeric part of your health routine:

Turmeric Milk

Turmeric contains antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial agents that all help strengthen the immune system. Making a turmeric milk, or “Golden Milk,” is an easy, soothing, and effective way to incorporate turmeric into one's diet. There are also a lot of different flavors that can be added or subtracted for optimal customizability. To make Golden Milk, heat almond or coconut milk up in a small pot. Add 1 tablespoon turmeric and continue to whisk until it is fully dissolved. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, black peppercorns, and honey (or sweetener of choice) to taste.

 Turmeric Face Mask

Turmeric is also a natural antiseptic and can be used to treat damaged skin. Turmeric face masks are popular with brides in India, and are used the day before the wedding to create beautiful looking skin. To make your own mask, mix honey, yogurt, or milk with a few tablespoons of turmeric in a bowl and stir until it forms a smooth paste. Apply to clean skin for approximately 20 minutes before washing off.

Turmeric Scalp Mask

Make a turmeric scalp mask to help reduce oil production and balance the PH level of your scalp. Mix 1 tablespoon of turmeric with 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Apply to scalp for 30 minutes and wash out with shampoo. So easy and so effective!

Turmeric & Honey Sprouted Oats

Turmeric is also incredibly easy to cook with. Throw it in with your scrambled eggs, on top of some roasted chicken, in any kind of  smoothie, or even in your morning oatmeal. Try this turmeric sprouted oats recipe for a perfect warm and hearty winter breakfast. It’s so, so easy to get creative with turmeric in cooking. It adds a fun color to your plate, and increases the nutritional density of your meal. It’s a win, win!

So now that you’ve got some tips on how to use the magical and powerful turmeric, you should probably add it to your kitchen of superfoods supplies. If you are buying turmeric as a powder, make sure to try and buy organic. You can also find turmeric root at most health food stores, which is the best way to go because it is the most fresh. All you have to do to use it is grate it, and it can be stored in your fridge for up to two weeks! Anyone can benefit from using turmeric, and it is a simple ingredient to add to your diet and skincare regimen.

Eat Real. Be Whole.

Beacon Blend is on a mission to help spread health and happiness to our communities. With just a few months into the market, we're thrilled that folks are starting to notice how important it is to include the whole-plant when choosing a cleanse or a juice.

As a startup goes, we're also proud to share that Beacon Blend is the only Boston juice shop that maintains the whole vegetable and whole fruit in it's juice blends. By keeping 100% of the nutrients and good fiber, this helps to slow down the absorption of sugar and aids in your digestive system.

Jaime Ducharme, the Health Editor at Boston Magazine recently featured a post on just this topic. In her post, Boston's Latest Juice Company Has Substance, Jaime touches on how Beacon Blend is a healthier and different option when looking into juicing and living a well-balanced lifestyle.

Getting down to it, fiber is one of the biggest reasons that fruits and vegetables are good for the body. They’re full of soluble and insoluble fibers that account for helping your digestive system. Each of our blends includes the fiber and never uses anything but, organic, superfoods and produce.

100% Real. 100% Whole.

Most of us live in a busy world. You go to work, prepare dinner, fold the laundry, exercise, all while keeping one eye on your loved ones and another on taking care of yourself. You plan your day while listening to the latest pod cast and then plan your weekend. In the rush to accomplish our daily tasks, it's easy to find ourselves losing connection with the present moment—missing out on what we're doing and how we're feeling. Running more than one business, I can relate to getting caught up in the shuffle of the almighty to-do list.

For me, more deadlines means more purposeful time each day to just be. Even if only for a few minutes, it's a daily practice that I've come to cherish.
